Wendy Myers: Today, I have on a mask that’s made by Andy Hnilo. He is the founder of Alitura Naturals and they have this wonderful clay mask that’s a detox mask and it leaves your skin so soft and smooth and detoxed and really clear and smooth. And I really, really like it. So I told him I’d wear it on the podcast today. It’s funny.

But he is going to be coming on the podcast to talk about some of the problems and the typical products that we buy at the grocery store, at Target, at Whole Foods, at the department store and a lot of products that people think are natural may be not so natural. And he’s going to talk about his amazing ingredients that he uses in his products and his really amazing story about how he was in a car accident, really serious car accident and how he healed himself with really healthy detox products that he developed, how he founded his company and with whole foods.

So please keep in mind that this program is not intended to diagnose or treat any disease or health condition and is not a substitute for medical advice. So please consult your health practitioner before engaging in anything that we suggest today on the show.

01:52 About Andy Hnilo

Wendy Myers: Our guest, Andy Hnilo, he’s an actor and a model and the founder of Alitura Naturals. And we’re going to discuss the importance of taking care of your biggest organ, your skin and also practicing gratitude and handling recovery situations.

Andy is a skin care guru, a fitness fanatic and a former professional baseball player. He’s got an incredible survival story to share and weighs in on self-experimentation in finding the right formulas for your own situation.

Andy, thank you so much for coming on the show.

Andy Hnilo: Thanks for having me.

Wendy Myers: Yeah, as you guys can see, the ones that are listening, I’ve got the mask on. Why not?

Andy has this amazing line of products called Alitura and I decided to put the clay mask on and have glowing beautiful skin when we’re done with the podcast. But I thought it would be funny to put it on.

Andy Hnilo: I’m glad you did. I’m glad you did. I did one earlier. It’s going to be [inaudible 00:02:55] pretty soon. We’ll see how that goes. But yeah, it’s a fun thing.

I was in a big accident, March 28, 2011 where I was crossing the street and I was hit by a westbound heading SUV hitting the eastbound lane and run over by a Tundra. I just lost consciousness, bone exposed at the bottom of my mouth, broke seven ribs. I woke up in ICU in Cedar Sinai. I was on morphine. I was on a lot of it.

I saw two buddies in the room, both of them with their heads on their hands and I’m just wondering what’s going on. They heard me start to mumble or whatever and they looked over and they’re like, “No, no, don’t talk” because my jaw was in particles and they’re just like, “You don’t want to lose any of those particles because they could reattach those hopefully.” I quickly found out what had happened. My world was rocked.

But long story short, I created, just by ingredient by ingredient, this mask to help detoxify my system or skin, my largest organ and just to help remove the impurities. I was going through CT scans and X-rays bi-monthly just to see how the bones are growing back. But I was in a constant fog from that and things like antibiotics I was on. It just took my zest out. I was just constantly in a daze.

The only thing that helped me through that was – my jaw was wired shut, so I couldn’t eat correctly. But I created a tonic. I did my research. I had nothing to do. I didn’t want to leave the house, so I just created a product that I would wear every other day just to help remove the impurities and create circulation to the surfaces of the skin and help accelerate the healing, but also help remove those impurities that I was faced with daily. So here we are.

Wendy Myers: Yeah. What kind of impact that accident had on your life? It just sounds so devastating.

Andy Hnilo: Yeah. I mean I was in the entertainment industry, I still am, but it’s not like – I was a model and an actor. That’s how I made my money and you look in the mirror and you quickly look away.

I mean, I realized how bad it may sound to everybody. It was. It made me extremely self-conscious. I went to whole new grocery stores. I was in a really bad shape, but I also had a perspective from the fact that I was alive. I had to remind myself that people want to survive and stuff like that. So there is a reason, there was a purpose and I quickly found that it was up to me to find what my purpose was, but I was supposed to be here. I’m supposed to be here.

Wendy Myers: You can’t tell. You had a really good plastic surgeon.

Andy Hnilo: Thank you.

Wendy Myers: You can’t tell that you had an accident at all.

Andy Hnilo: I appreciate that. Believe me, you definitely could though. My jaw was up to here. I had two titanium plates inserted, one underneath and one on top. I got those out about October. I think eight or nine months after the accident. The bone had grown back.

So the things I was faced with, it was so tight around there and I want to get those plates out because I didn’t want metal in my head. So I got them taken out and I had to go through the whole recovery all over again because you’re shocking your system again getting those bolts – not the wires, but the plates taken out, just unscrewing. I was just going through that all over again.

When you’re really almost, not back to normal, but the swelling had gone down, I just had to go through it all over again. But it was just important for me to get those plates out. But just the inflammation, just really putting yourself, your system through that shock was really bad.

I mean, some people, you have these conversations and they try to maintain eye contact, but they immediately look down to your jaw. It made me self-conscious, but it’s okay. I just told myself I’m alive. There’s a perspective that you have to have. I definitely do and I definitely did.

Wendy Myers: Well, that’s hard! I live in Los Angeles too. A lot of friends are actors and models and things like that. And when your job is making money with your looks and your dream is to make money as an actor or whatnot and make a living, much of that is based on your looks. It’s Hollywood. So that must have been completely devastating.

Andy Hnilo: It was. But I just used little things in my head to motivate me to keep me positive. And I had great friends, great family that I just relied on to just have that little push daily to keep me going.

Also, just perspective, people [inaudible 00:07:46]. There are way worse. I walked out of the hospital from that. My nurse was actually an ex-marine and he’s like, “Anytime you can leave the hospital is a good day or walk out of a hospital is a good day.” That really set the tone for my recovery.

He was right. I mean, here’s a guy [inaudible 00:08:01]. He saw it all! [Inaudible 00:08:06] test tube. I was in a bad shape, but I was able to walk. I was a little wobbly, but I was able to walk out of the hospital and he was right. That really set the tone for my recovery.

From then on, it was just, “All right, how do I beat this thing?” There were inflammations and just also removing all those impurities. I was meeting with Chinese herbalists.

I didn’t use what my surgeon told me to use for my product. It was just loaded with toxins, corticosteroids and just a lot of things. I did my research on the carcinogenics.

Wendy Myers: What did he want you to use?

Andy Hnilo: It’s back there. It’s on the box. I forgot the name, but it was a skin-thinning serum.

Wendy Myers: Retinol?

Andy Hnilo: What’s that?

Wendy Myers: Is it retinol?

Andy Hnilo: Oh, retinol actually isn’t that bad and it’s very effective. It’s not as carcinogenic as a lot of the ingredients out there. I’d have to go look. It was a hydrocortisol. I forget, but it’s just loaded with man-made synthetic ingredients that according to my research are carcinogenic. It’s on that government recognized carcinogenic list that I just wanted to stay away from because that’s what I was trying to do, remove the impurities from my system and I didn’t want to escort them right back in through a product.

So I just use things like cacao butter, colostrum, manuka honey. I mean, ingredient by ingredient, I would just buy these things and make little pace. It was undeniably effective. Pretty much everything that I got besides a few things here and there were effective and they accelerated the healing process with my abrasions, my scarring and I just felt better.

I had no intention of ever having a product. I wanted to look like I used to look and just feel better. So undeniable results turned into the podcast of Dave Asprey just about how I use nutrition to accelerate my healing process through my recovery. It was never supposed to be about skin care, but towards the end, he asked what I did to regenerate my skin cells and how I healed my scars and abrasions.

As hard as it was at the time, I was like, “I’m wearing this clay mask the other day” and I just explained what was in it and how I use circulation to the surface of the skin and subtle exfoliation and then escorting micronutrients and the growth factors right back into that freshly exfoliated skin. And it just works. I like stuff that works. There are so many products out there that are ineffective and this was undeniably effective.

He was like, “Do you have a name for it?” I said, “No, I don’t have a name. It’s just this massive I created out of my bedroom. I moved everything into my living room and now that’s my lab.” I was like, “Yeah, if anybody out there wants to contact me, just contact, man.”

I didn’t have enough. He had 14 million downloads at the time and I got contacts from people all around the world. And quickly I had to set up a website. He became a partner of now what’s now Alitura Naturals and here we are, 39 countries later. That’s 18 months into it.

As soon as I’m done with this, I’d go to the post office and just deliver orders. I have purpose now and it’s helping people feel better about themselves.

Wendy Myers: That’s an amazing story. It’s so interesting. I’ve heard this before, people that have had a major health crisis. And that’s how I became a health coach. I just started my website. It was born out of my own health crisis and all the crisis of my family and my father, et cetera. But I love that you created this product that restored your skin and your health.

11:54 Alitura Natural’s Clay Mask

Wendy Myers: Can you tell us a little bit? The clay mask that I’m wearing right now, can you tell us what exactly is in the mask and how that helped to regenerate your skin?

Andy Hnilo: Yes. I have been using just one ingredient clay mask, calcium bentonite clay since I was 22 years old. Once a week, I had bad skin. That was extremely effective. Clays are loaded with minerals, especially silica and manganese and so it’s just natural minerals that can be escorted right into the dermis.

That was just one ingredient. So I bought that bulk. On that same website, there were other clays like pyrophillite, Rhassoul clay and Kaolin clay. It was like my little potion that I would buy. So I bought them all in bulk. They’re really inexpensive and I enjoyed doing it.

I would never measure things out and I wasn’t really particular with it. But Kaolin clay is very popular, very common in a lot of treatments and a lot of skin care products. Rhassoul clay from Morocco was incredible with bringing circulation to the surface of the skin. And it’s in a lot of hair mass. It’s in a lot of spa treatments.

I would study spa treatments and I use a lot of common ingredients like organic kelp powder. And I also added a couple of things that I had never seen used topically like colostrum and fresh water pearl powder and ginseng. I’ve never seen any of those. I still haven’t. Pearl powder, I have now. But at the time, I didn’t.

It was so good internally. And it turns out that the Geishas have been using fresh water pearl powder for centuries. They believe that a paler appearance you’re not out in the sun working and it signifies a higher class. Do you know what I mean?

So I would add that, colostrum and things like ascorbic acid to really create that circulation to the surface of the skin and really just get those micronutrients escorted back into the dermis. And hopefully, pretty soon, you’ll start to maybe feel a little [inaudible 00:14:04] effect on the surface of the skin and you’ll see the color is starting to change right now. Maybe you are, maybe you’re not.

Wendy Myers: Yeah, it’s going to be cracking at the end of the podcast.

Andy Hnilo: So that’s what it was. There’s so much information out there and it’s on us. And I was in the situation where I had to use myself as my own biggest site experiment to figure out how do I beat this thing?

I had nothing but time. And I started spa treatments. I did a lot of research, but the information I found out there, we were asking friends, institutions, people on the spas on what they did and what they used. I love this stuff and I just bought. It turns out now I bought hundreds of pounds of it. But this time, I’ll just buy little five kilo bags here and there of things and I got little potions and it was extremely effective. It made me feel better about my appearance and I started to really feel that scar tissue go down or see it go down because of that circulation and removing that inflammation around was undeniable. So here we are.

Wendy Myers: Yeah, a lot of people don’t get enough circulation in their skin and their skin is very congested. I recommend all of my clients to do an infrared sauna because your skin is your largest detox organ and you have draw impurities out of your skin. So I think that’s a great way to use lays and other things so the ingredients are in your mask to draw them out of your skin. Obviously, that is going to have a positive effect on the health and appearance of your skin as well.

Andy Hnilo: Yeah, absolutely. And the organic kelp powder is a very potent topical cleanser. There’s a lot of vitamin A, C, K, B12, sodium alginate, very potent detoxifiers as well. Just everything in here has a purpose. I heard that the workers in China do handle the ginseng and their hands don’t age.

I met with herbalist. I really want to figure out how to beat this. It’s super crippling. There were a lot of knowledgeable people out there. I have consulted with but several different, George from Jing Herbs, Ron Teeguarden, a couple of different apprentices over there, Dragon Herbs. I don’t know if you’ve been there, but there are so many knowledgeable people out there and I was just a sponge. I wanted to learn, I wanted to figure out how to beat this and I’m very grateful for their help and that’s the reason why…

My healing process was accelerated through that. I’m super grateful for it.

16:43 How is Alitura Naturals different from other brands

Wendy Myers: So your company is Alitura Naturals. It’s an all natural skin care company. So what is the difference between your products compared to something you’d find at Walgreens or Target? I think a lot of people don’t understand that the products that they’re using are very, very toxic.

Now, I’ve talked a lot about this on the podcast. I’m a podcast-freak too, but I’m a product-freak and I have been using them since I was 13. I’m reading labels. And you eventually learn there are so many toxic ingredients. So can you talk about some of those and how your product is different?

Andy Hnilo: Absolutely. There is even Walgreens and Target, that’s a whole another, but even if you go to Whole Foods. Walgreens and Target, when I see that, you read the back of the labels. That’s really smart that you did.

I didn’t start doing that until I was about 22 or 23. So I grew up with the Clear Cells, the Neutrogena, the Clean & Clears, isopropyl alcohol, the propylene glycol, the steroids, parabens, artificial colors, the fragrances. All those things irritate the skin or are just potent carcinogens, especially as for glycol. Not only is it drying, it’s the number one government-recognized carcinogen. The parabens are high too, propylene glycol, these things cause cancer.

There are lists out there thankfully now that people can study. They can just go down the list and figure out, “Oh, this is supposed to be in there.” But I took that to another level year by year trying to figure out what is going to be the most effective and cleanest way.

I felt like if I can’t eat it, then I shouldn’t be putting it in my face. You got to treat your skin like another mouth. So everything that I use, I started my own products just here, in my kitchen, in my bathroom. It’s crazy. There are 15 or 20 different little things that I would do and it was therapeutic for me.

I’d melt down butter, I’d melt down beeswax. And finally I realized I have something here. This is added to my mask. I have no intention of creating. Well, I did have an intention of creating moisturizers, but that’s how it started off. And then I got it professionally formulated.

I don’t use things like glycerin. I definitely don’t use any of those ingredients I just listed, alcohols, glycerin. They’re fillers, thickeners, stabilizers, preservatives. I don’t use any of those.
The reason is I really feel like you have to treat your – that’s how you can separate yourself from other brands that are on the shelves. It’s by having absolute purpose for every single ingredient in there. There are no fillers.

I want to have above and beyond oils and they’re not just things like jojoba oil or coconut oil. They’re just any oils that are cheaper. I don’t care what it costs me. I want to get the absolute best raw-served ingredients that I can and be able to explain why.

Think German chamomile, sandalwood, these are things that are really expensive, but they’re extremely effective. Why not? That’s how my product stands out. It’s because I will go to know – I mean I’m not going to cut any cost. I’d rather get hit with a little bit on margin just to provide the best product out there. That’s what makes me feel good about what I put on the shelves.

Wendy Myers: Yeah, I think people don’t realize the ingredients in the products we’re using. Number one is fragrance, very estrogenic. It’s a petroleum-based product. And the parabens, the methyl paraben, propylparaben, butylparaben are also very estrogenic and that’s one of the reasons why people are overweight and why there are so many estrogen-dependent cancers and things like that because these xenoestrogens, these fake estrogens are filling up all of our estrogen and activating all of our estrogen receptors.

It’s very, very toxic. And people are putting this on their skin and you absorb it through your skin. I think it’s better than if you eat it. It gets directly into your blood stream.

Andy Hnilo: Yes, right into your bloodstream. Yeah, you’re right. When you eat it, like you said, it’s not fully absorbed. It’s in the gut lining or whatever. But right here, like what you said, it’s right into the bloodstream, escorted right in there. That’s what makes me worried.

Even with deodorants, propylene glycol is a big precursor. It’s extremely estrogenic. A lot of deodorants contain propylene glycol and I immediately got my whole family off. It was just a check here. It’s in everything. Believe it or not, I got some macaroons years ago and it had propylene glycol in it. What possibly could it be doing in my chocolate covered macaroons? But it’s there.

So I highly encourage people just to do their research. Thankfully, they are starting to come up with more lists of what these things are. And they are hidden in a lot of products and it’s just up to use to help educate as best as we can the people that we know.

Wendy Myers: Propylene glycol is in a lot of these so called natural products at Whole Foods. It’s in a lot of deodorants, the natural deodorants. And a lot of these, I think, large product lines are owned by really big companies. A lot of the products in Whole Foods, they’ve been bought out by these big brands because the natural industry is the only growth industry. So you have to be careful about the so called natural product lines at Whole Foods too, right?

Andy Hnilo: Yes, you do. And I’m starting to find out as my brand grows that – I can’t name names. But a lot of the big companies own a lot of different brands. They own the same ones that “competing” with each other. That’s such a tip to me on how big the industry is.

I understand and I get it, that’s unfortunate, but that’s why I do what I do. I’m just going to continue doing it. It’s going pretty well right now. We’ll just finish up my night cream, another moisturizer, mask, oil blend cleansers. So I’m just going to continue to develop products with this intention of just having unparalleled ingredient roster. And it’s in my control. I just don’t understand some of the products that are out there.

23:11 Alitura Naturals Products

Wendy Myers: What are some of the top products right now? You have a facial moisturizer also?

Andy Hnilo: Yeah, I have a moisturizer, night cream, my mask, my activating oil blend, which is almost finalized right now. It’s just like your mask right there in addition to adding apple cider vinegar too. Did you add water or apple cider vinegar on that?

Wendy Myers: I did water.

Andy Hnilo: Okay. It’s still effective with water when you go on the road. I don’t expect people to be carrying a little bottle of apple cider vinegar with them. Yeah, it’s still effective with water. We’re in development right now with the cleanser, a scrub, possibly body lotion, hair products.

Even hair products out there, I have a texturizing hair clay out there that I’m creating, but I based it off of a product that I used to use, but there were so many. It’s clay, it’s a texturizing hair clay. It should be two to three ingredient tops, but there were eight or 10 and there were so many other counterproductive ingredients to your hair follicle and that’s close to your brain and that’s close to your scalp. I just can’t figure out why some of the things were in it like yellow B5. It’s an artificial color.

But there are clays out there that are beautifully colored just naturally. So I’m just going to go ahead and use that and based on dark blonde hair. But I’m also going to fully create a brown hair and stuff like that.

I’m obsessed with this stuff. It’s what I just pace around my apartment all day thinking about, just how to do certain things, what I want to do next. I’m working on a supplement now that is my morning tonic, but encapsulated. I’m actually signing off tomorrow on it. I’m pretty excited. It’s called Alitura – go ahead.

Wendy Myers: What is your morning tonic and how did you conceive to put that in a supplement?

Andy Hnilo: It’s so much, but I love it. My whole thing after my accident was I wanted to just bring circulation from head to toe to my body and just get that to purify my blood and help to just get that good blood built and circulated around my body from head to toe, just things like adaptogenic herbs to Ayurvedic herbs, anti-inflammatory herbs, amino acids.

So I mean I’m using things, curcumin, spirulina, Schisandra, ginseng and just all these heavily researched herbs. But I’m putting them in capsules because it doesn’t taste – it’s intense, but a lot of those – just the whole philosophy behind that is that bitterness. That’s what that medicine is. Have you heard about that?

That’s what the medicine comes from, bitter melon, things like aloe vera, just things that aren’t necessarily the best tasting things in the world, but that’s what it all comes from. That bitternes.
I read a few Chinese herbalists speaking about that. I think Daniel Vitalis touched on that. He was the first person I ever listened to, Daniel Vitalis from Surthrival like 2008 where I really started to get into this. he was big on things like aloe vera and that just got the ball rolling and I just started doing research on how effective some of these Ayurvedic herbs and anti-inflammatory herbs can be, especially the Chinese cultured. It’s just fascinating to me.

It’s undeniably effective. So after my accident, when I was in that fog, I decided to get those impurities out of my system and I did that through tonic. And it’s growing. It takes a while to put together in the morning. It’s more therapeutic – well, not more therapeutic, but equally as therapeutic as it is for purpose of cleansing the system and removing those impurities.

I’m 34 and I feel better than I did when I was 23 or 24. People tell you, “Oh, once you hit 25, it’s all downhill.”

Wendy Myers: I heard it was 40 that it’s all downhill.

Andy Hnilo: Back then, men’s testosterone or growth fats, whatever it is, something starts to go down at 25. It starts to peak at 30. You keep hearing these numbers. Oh my god.

I’m really grateful to say this, but doing all the research on how I eat, it’s effective. And I feel better than I did than I was back 23 or 24. It’s because of the things that are out there. They are undeniably effective.

Wendy Myers: Yeah, I feel the same way since I’ve been eating a healthier diet, I’ve been detoxing, I have a detox program that I encourage people to do. It’s very intense though, but since I’ve been detoxing, I feel better than I have ever felt in my life. And I felt really good when I was 25 and whatnot, but now I’m going to be 44 this year and I feel amazing.

Andy Hnilo: Yeah. You don’t look 44.

Wendy Myers: No. I’m technically 43. But yeah, it’s amazing when you eat a healthy diet, live a healthy lifestyle and detox, there’s a lot it can do for you for sure.

And I know when I first started getting into natural health, I’m like, “Okay, I’m going to detox on my beauty products.” First was I went to Whole Foods to start getting on my natural products and certainly I got upgrade. But I think we need a lot more companies like yours, really truly natural product lines with very few ingredients like 10 or fewer ingredients on the label. We need that because there are so many large companies misleading consumers that their products are in fact natural.

Andy Hnilo: Absolutely. Look at my night cream, it has 28 ingredients. I have 19 different sources. But everything is just…

Wendy Myers: It’s fine if it’s natural. It’s okay.

Andy Hnilo: Yeah. But I totally agree. It’s good. As we said earlier, there are a lot of good brands out there with the same intentions and that’s awesome. We’re all the same.

I want to air one recently. There was another skin care line just sitting there sampling. I just went over and I just wanted to get their whole – what do they use? And it’s just cool. We’re aligned with ingredient, just attention to detail on purifying our ingredient index. That’s great. I mean it’s starting to grow and there are more and more brands with similar intentions. So it’s good.

But if there’s one thing that people out there get out of this is please just all the way to the bottom, do your research on ingredients and what’s in there because what we’re putting on to our bodies is escorted right into our bloodstream. We have to be very careful with that.

Wendy Myers: Yeah. Those may go right to your liver and right into your bloodstream, et cetera.

I think the product manufacturers, these preservatives and ingredients help them and help them make more money and help them keep their product from the shelf longer because those are the products that don’t last as long because they have natural ingredients. You can use natural preservatives as well, but the synthetic preservatives are cheap and they make the products cheaper.

Andy Hnilo: Can you hear me?

Wendy Myers: Yeah. Can you hear me?

Andy Hnilo: Oh there you are. Geez, I broke up. I’m sorry.

Wendy Myers: Sorry. Yes, Skype does that.

Andy Hnilo: I’m repeating the last. I lost the last 15 seconds.

Wendy Myers: Yeah. I was just saying that these product manufacturers put these terrible ingredients, the synthetic ingredients in the products to make their products last longer. It makes them a lot more money, but it’s very toxic for the consumer.

Andy Hnilo: Yeah. It’s just that whole thing that I learned early on, that mass produced equals the bigger it is produced, the more untraceable certain ingredients are.
The first thing that I heard early on is “How do we cut cost? Okay, where do you get this ozonated olive oil?” I have one source. My source is out of Florida and he’s awesome. But I don’t want to necessarily cut cost to potentially ruin that killer ingredient that I have. I sourced this out based on my own research and not what the best cost would be.

It’s probably the smartest business move, but I’m in this for the best product and not what’s going to make me the most money right now. It’s the product. It’s not the best business philosophy or whatever, but I don’t want that to change. I want what’s the best.

You guys are using what I am using. I’m creating products for myself based on my own knowledge and my own response to – I have a really bad sensitive skin. There’s a little bit irritation that’s going to be there for weeks. So I have the most sensitive skin ever. So I just create products based on my own, how it feels on my body and on my skin and we just go from there.

Yeah, it’s extremely important to just have the best ingredient and not just cut cost and try to find the best priced ingredients if that makes sense.

Wendy Myers: Yeah. That’s the exact philosophy I would use as well because I would never be able to compromise quality or anything. I’d have to use exactly the ingredients that I want to use for myself.

A lot of these companies cut corners and they use these super cheap synthetic ingredients that are so toxic, but it makes their products last for years and years on the shelves. All those products at the department store look really fancy and have this beautiful packaging. That price you’re paying is for the marketing, it’s for the packaging, not for the ingredients.

All those products at department stores are all owned by L’Oreal and Estee Lauder. They’re all owned by two companies. And they have all the same toxic cheap ingredients in them.

Andy Hnilo: Yeah. That’s why it’s just on us to hopefully continue to educate. And I’ll continue to do what I do as far as creating as food grade as dense a product as I can. Yeah, it’s what I’m going to continue to do.

33:25 Andy Hnilo’s Recovery Diet

Wendy Myers: So you said that in your healing and recovery, you used a certain type of diet and certain foods to assist in your healing. Can you talk a little bit about that?

Andy Hnilo: Yeah. My jaw was wired shut. If I was going to do anything, I had a little slit towards the back of the corner of the back of my mouth where I could the chunks or whatever back there. That’s a little intense.

I would do placenta, egg yolks, bison liver. I would just put them in and then I would boil beets, boil vegetables. I would just try to blend everything as best as I could and then brush my teeth or brush the wires after and hopefully get everything out.

Wendy Myers: It sounds delicious.

Andy Hnilo: Oh, it was horrible! The first time I did it, I actually threw up and throwing up through wires, it was horrible. Yeah, that was pretty bad to watch apparently. It was bad to have it happen to you, but it’s even worse.

My body didn’t accept it on the first time, but I knew what I needed to put it in my system to help recover quickly. I did my research on the most nutrient dense ingredients as possible, which I wasn’t supposed to do because the surgery was done internally. And so they told me absolutely not to ingest any raw ingredients because the bacteria get in there and we can get an infection and we had to do a surgery all over again.

It was really risky, but I felt I knew how my system was going to recover quickly. That’s just what I did. I don’t want to get [inaudible 00:35:02] up there. I don’t want to get in trouble or anything. But that’s what I did and I felt like I recovered. My recovery process was exponentially quicker than it would have been had I done – and sure, that’s made of soup. I mean, the food out there in the ICU and just the hospitals in general –

Just I’m grateful to be here. I’m grateful for western medicine and having people out there with the knowledge to get me back to where I was and surgery went great. I’m grateful for that. But I think the nutrition – I’m sure you can relate – it can be stepped up in the hospital. In that moment where you’re in a very fragile state, nutrition can help you so much.

They had no options for me, so my family went out and got really good nutrient dense food. I was able to just hopefully detoxed and eliminate impurities from my system and also get good nourishing antioxidant mineral ingredients back into my system. It just helped the process as quickly as possible.

But it was tough, especially with your jaw wired shut. You’re doing smoothies primarily. But I did figure out a way to get food into the system through those smoothies. It was intense. It didn’t taste good, but I really feel like that was the reason why I recovered as quickly as I did.

Wendy Myers: Yeah, I was going to mention Ensure that they tried to pawn off on people. It’s almost like prison rations that they try to give people. It’s horrible.

Like my dad’s doctor. My dad was dying of cancer. The doctor gave him Ensure. I looked at the ingredients. “Are you f-ing kidding?” It does have the dairy that most people are sensitive to.

Andy Hnilo: Yeah. Sugar. It had to be 30 grams of sugar in that little thing. Geez, 30 grams?

One of the best things you can tell people who are – every little capsule has 1000 milligrams. That’s a grand. That’s a lot. So picture opening up 30 of those capsules in a little eight ounce glass of water or whatever, would you ever do that? Absolutely not. But you’d probably crush a 12 ounce of smoothie or 12 ounce of Coca Cola can rather, but just explaining to people that there are 36 capsules of sugar that you’re drinking. I don’t even do that in a year probably.

So you got to be very careful with sugar. As you know, it’s probably one of the worst, for sure, for our body, dairy, all that stuff. Soy, you got to watch.

Wendy Myers: Sugar is terrible for your skin. That sugar is terrible for your skin.

Andy Hnilo: Absolutely.

37:51 The Most Pressing Health Issue in the World Today: Inorganic Foods

Wendy Myers: So I have a question I like to ask to all of my guests.

Andy Hnilo: Sure.

Wendy Myers: What do you think is the most pressing health issue in the world today?

Andy Hnilo: The most pressing health issue? I would just the chemicals that are on an organic food. If just the way a cattle or a beef is made or chicken or inorganic beef, chicken, vegetables, if it’s not organic, there are just chemicals that are being escorted right into the food that we eat, we’re absorbing that and we have to be extremely careful.

I notice this whenever I would go to a farmer’s market. I would go to a local store and I would just try to what I thought was the best price for my vegetables. But getting the best price meant that I was eating inorganic vegetables. And I would make these big smoothies and I would go, “Why am I not sleeping well at night? I would wake up like a full on hangover detox.”

I’m doing something that’s supposed to be good for my body. It’s supposed to be good for my health. I went to a full on detox. I could barely walk around. I would have to take naps in the morning. It was because of the inorganic vegetables that I was putting in my smoothies. That’s the only reason I could figure it out.

I switched it up immediately because even things like kale, collard greens, Swiss chard, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, avocados, it doesn’t matter what it is. I would really recommend going organic because those chemicals that we’re absorbing, the body goes through a full on experience, full on detox. It ruined my sleep, ruined my mood, my libido, you name it.

I would say that’s the most pressing issue. I would go all organic, local preferably. Ask questions to the farmer’s market. Go there. “What do you use as herbicides if any? Hopefully not any, but let me just ask questions.” Definitely go organic, all organic on everything.

Wendy Myers: Yeah, it’s such a huge problem. A lot of countries where there’s spring or there’s spring glycophosphates and other toxic chemicals that the people, the farmers, their children are being born with birth defects.

They’re developing rare diseases, not to mention us when we’re eating pesticides that are so estrogenic, another xenoestrogen we’re putting in our body. Some of them contain arsenic and other toxic metals. It’s a huge, huge problem that a lot of people are just closing their eyes to and ignoring.

Andy Hnilo: Yeah.

Wendy Myers: I completely agree.

Andy Hnilo: What do you think is the biggest issue? I’m curious.

Wendy Myers: Oh no, you had to ask me. I think the toxins for me. My biggest message on my website is that a lot of people…

Andy Hnilo: Detox or diet?

Wendy Myers: Huh?

Andy Hnilo: Is it detox or diet?

Wendy Myers: Yeah. That’s one of my slogans, “Detox or diet.”

Andy Hnilo: That makes sense.

Wendy Myers: Yeah. A lot of people, they exercise, they eat right, they sleep, they take supplements and doing all these things right, but people don’t still feel good. They hit 30, 35, 40 and they’re still tired, they have brain fog and et cetera.

They have to detox heavy metals and chemicals. And they have to do it on a daily basis, doing something to detox on a daily basis in order to be healthy. Otherwise, you’d pay the piper at some point. We absorb dozens of heavy metals and the CDC has established we have about 500 chemicals in our body and at some point. Those do cause symptoms of disease if we don’t rid our body of them.

Andy Hnilo: You spoke earlier on infrared saunas. That’s something I’ve been doing just because it felt good. You leave the sauna and it feels great. You feel great because you rid your body of those impurities.

I’ve been doing saunas since when I was 19 or 20 years old just because it felt great. But then you start to do research on how – I’m just talking local gym saunas. I do infrared overtime. I can, but there aren’t too many places where they have them. Hopefully down the road, I’m able to buy one and just do it out of my house.

But just down the road, just for the record, the mask right now and hopping in infrared sauna, it’s unbelievable. Right when you start to get that drying like where it is right now I see, it just opens up those pores and escorts those micronutrients right in there just a little bit further. Yeah, it’s my favorite thing to do for sure. So just down the road, I would have that.

Wendy Myers: I have to try that.

Andy Hnilo: Oh, it’s unbelievable. It’s unbelievable. That’s a good one, saunas, constantly detoxing. That’s a really good one.

Wendy Myers: Yeah, very, very important. Andy, thank you so much for coming on the show. I really appreciate. That was fun. I had fun wearing the mask.

Andy Hnilo: Yeah, let me know how it turns out. If you wash it off, you’re probably going to be a little rosy, but it will go away within 30 minutes or so. Do a cold rinse to close the pores. You’ll be good.

Wendy Myers: Okay, good. Yeah, I’m excited to have a fresh glowing skin afterwards like a Geisha.

Andy Hnilo: Just [inaudible 00:43:06]. I appreciate being there.
