The near infrared LEDs are the most advanced, cutting-edge tools to detox because they emit more concentrated near infrared light compared to a normal light bulb. For this reason (and many more!), red light therapy is the tool you need to aid in healing and skin rejuvenation!

Just like whole food that can be broken down into different vitamins and minerals, sunlight can be broken down into different colors. And just like the nutrients in whole food, each color in sunlight has its own effect on our bodies. Read on to learn more about Red Light Therapy and how it can help you!

When are bodies are living under a toxic burden we experience oxidative stress and a disruption in ATP production.

Oxidative stress is essentially an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the ability of the body to counteract, or detoxify, their harmful effects.

Red and infrared light energy helps to counteract these harmful processes, thus restoring ATP production and reducing oxidative stress. The end result is normal cellular metabolism.

How? Let’s dig a little deeper…

The Many Benefits of Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy stimulates something called mitochondria – the powerhouses of the cell. They are organelles that act almost like a digestive system – taking in nutrients, breaking them down, and creating energy-rich molecules called ATP, or Adenosine Triphosphate.

All living things need to make ATP. Some people even refer to it as the “energy currency of life”. ATP is a small molecule with a huge job: to provide usable energy for cells.

ATP is produced through cellular respiration, which includes the following 4 steps:

  1. Glycolysis
  2. Pyruvate oxidation
  3. Citric acid (Kreb’s) cycle
  4. Oxidative phosphorylation

Most of this activity occurs within mitochondria, the “powerhouse” of the cell. For the sake of this article, we’ll focus on the last step, oxidative phosphorylation.  That’s where red light therapy is believed to help the most.

These are just some of the proven benefits of red light therapy produced by near infrared LEDs:

  • Increased collagen production
  • Anti-aging
  • Enhanced circulation
  • Improved anti-inflammatory responses
  • Increased support for the lymphatic system
  • Repairs sun damage
  • Reduced wrinkles
  • Heals acne and other blemishes
  • Fades scars and stretch marks
  • Speeds wound healing
  • Reduces joint inflammation
  • Pain relief
  • Hair loss prevention and regrowth

It may sound too good to be true, but substantial evidence shows that red light therapy literally enhances anything the body does.

It is a 100% natural healing and rejuvenating therapy with zero side effects. And yes, it works!

What Happens When Our Cells Aren’t Healthy?

When we get sick, injured, stressed, etc., mitochondria in our cells can produce nitric oxide (NO).

During the creation of ATP synthase, nitric oxide competes with oxygen and binds to this enzyme.  This in turn stops the eventual production of ATP and thereby increases oxidative stress, which can lead to cellular death.

Now, there are different theories as to how red light actually helps to restore normal cellular function. But the following mechanism of action is backed by some pretty solid research performed at Harvard University.

You see, red light (with the right wavelength and intensity) breaks the bond between nitric oxide and cytochrome c oxidase.  This allows oxygen to bind to NADH, which restores the normal pathway for hydrogen ions to produce ATP synthase.

In summary: red light frees up cytochrome c oxidase to allow for the eventual production of ATP.

By breaking that bond and restoring the production of ATP, the result is normal cellular metabolism.  And once our cells are healthy again, we’ll see the following benefits that relate to better skin health:

  • Increased collagen production due to stimulated fibroblasts through the release of cytokines.
  • Enhanced circulation through the formation of new capillaries.
  • Improved anti-inflammatory emissions due to increased lymph system activity.

Let’s Talk Wavelengths

The human body needs light.  Without the sun, we would quickly become dangerously deficient in vitamin D.  Not to mention the other physiological and emotional challenges we would face.

The wavelengths of visible light are tiny, ranging from 400 to 700 billionths of a meter, or 400-700 nanometers (nm).

The wavelength of light defines the color as we see it.  And each color has its own unique properties and penetrates your body in different ways.

Sunlight is a combination of the entire visible light spectrum (400 – 700 nm) as well as UV (300 – 400 nm) and infrared (700 – 1000 nm) light.  Most people are well aware of the potential dangers of too much sunlight due to damaging UV rays.

However, the body has specific responses to light in the 600 – 900 nm wavelength range.  This light can pass through the tissues much easier than other wavelengths.

Specifically, light in the mid-600 nm and mid-800 nm range has been shown to provide optimal biological responses. This energy is absorbed by the body up to a depth of about 10-12 mm and stimulates ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is the mode of chemical energy transportation at the cellular level.

The cells receive this rejuvenating, anti-aging energy boost that enables them to perform their natural functions at a heightened level.

How Does Red Light Therapy Work?

Once absorbed into your body, light energy is converted into cellular energy, which kicks of a series of metabolic events like the formation of new capillaries, elevated production of collagen, and the release of ATP.

Collagen is a long-chain amino acid and the most abundant protein in the body.  It’s responsible for giving skin elasticity, hair its strength, and connective tissue its ability to hold everything in place.  In fact, the collagen protein makes up 30% of the total protein in the body, and 70% of the protein in the skin!

While collagen is beneficial to the entire body, it’s most noticeably beneficial to the skin. This is because as a person ages, the epidermic (outer layer of skin) thins and loses elasticity in a process known as elastosis. As this happens, a person tends to show more signs of ageing and acquire more wrinkles.

But don’t fear.  By restoring normal cellular function, red light stimulates the production of collagen, which is why so many people have reported about the rejuvenating benefits of red light therapy!

Red light therapy has been approved by the FDA and its effectiveness has been studied throughout the world.  Red light in the mid-600 nm range, and near infrared light in the mid-800 nm range have been proven time and time again – which is Joov designed the Joovv Light to emit wavelengths in those ranges.

The Benefits of Near Infrared Light Therapy

While traditional saunas require high temperatures for profuse sweating, infrared rays penetrate the skin and heat from the inside as well as on the skin’s surface. A near infrared lamp sauna penetrates deepest due to the fact that the heat source is concentrated in a small area, and not due to the frequencies of the energy used. This means the air temperature in the near infrared lamp sauna can remain much cooler, allowing you to stay in much longer, increasing benefits.

Sweating in an infrared sauna is a powerful tool for healing and prevention because infrared safely induces short-term hyperthermia and raises your core temperature enough to kill cancer-causing cells, detoxify your body of potentially carcinogenic heavy metals and toxins, and boost your immune system.

Why LED Light Therapy is Differentred vs near infrared light

LEDs allow for more usable light because of their tight wavelength span.  They generate very little heat and are incredibly durable.

Because they’re so efficient, LEDs are considered more eco-friendly than incandescent or fluorescent sources. LEDs are the preferred delivery mechanism for light therapy.
