About Brian Richards

Brian richardsBrian Richards founded Saunaspace.com in 2010. He studied chemistry at Montana State University. After building his own near infrared lamp, he experienced firsthand the healing power of sauna therapy by healing his health. Though the near infrared lamp therapy saunas offer superior, more effective sauna therapy, this type of therapy was limited in the products available. You either had to build it yourself, or buy an expensive, traditional wood box design. So, Brian decided to design his own saunas and built SaunaSpace from the ground up!

The Benefits of Near Infrared Saunas

Thanks for this great podcast (and for that matter, all your other great podcasts).

Questions:
I’ve looked at the Finnish study and did not find any specification as
to the type of sauna the men used. How or where did you find this info?

Also,
I had been taught just the opposite about how deep into the body far vs
near infrared penetrates. Do you happen to have a study reference on
this topic handy?

Again, thanks for all you share!!

In the Finnish study, likely the participants were utilizing traditional wet wood-fired and electric “hot-rocks” saunas. Jill should understand that the Finnish study emphasizes the healing/life extension benefits of frequent hyperthermic therapy, in this case sauna therapy. It does not address the unique and amazing phototherapy benefits of NIR light.

Regarding the 2nd question about near vs far infrared penetration levels, Jill indeed has it wrong, from a bad source.
You can refer to the NASA study that shows that NIR light penetrates human tissues up to 23cm (9in) (Whelan H T, Buchmann E V, Dhokalia A, Kane MP,Whelan N T, Wong-Riley M, Eells J T, Gould L J, Hammamieh R, Das R, Jett M. “Effect of NASA Light-Emitting Diode Irradiation on Molecular Changes for Wound Healing in Diabetic Mice”. Journal of Clinical Laser Medicine & Surgery. April 2003, 21(2): 67-74. doi:10.1089/104454703765035484.) https://saunaspace.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Effect-of-NASA-Light-Emitting-Diode-Irradiation-on-Molecular-Changes-for-Wound-Healing-in-Diabetic-Mice2.pdf The link takes you to a pdf of the NASA article on our website.

Near infrared is shorter wavelength = higher frequency = higher energy = deeper penetration.
Far infrared is longer wavelength = lower frequency = lower energy = less penetration. Far infrared only penetrates human tissue 1.5 – 3 in.

The unique benefits of near infrared light are IN ADDITION of the basic hyperthermic therapy benefits. These special “phototherapy” benefits are unique to NIR light and are not gotten from far infrared light.
i.e. the photo-receptors in most cells of our bodies are evolved to absorb NIR light. We DON’T have any photoreceptors for FIR light…that’s primarily why far infrared phototherapy benefit claims are bullshit.
Far infrared saunas heat you up exactly like wet saunas, and the benefits provided are only those of hyperthermic therapy, not phototherapy.
