During this time, people in Soviet bloc countries that were exposed to microwaves began coming down with strange symptoms such as dizziness, poor concentration, fatigue, emotional instability, and so on. This was the first time that we saw the detrimental impact that these frequencies could have on humans, and the condition was termed “microwave syndrome[1].”
Today, microwave syndrome often goes by a different name: electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS). EHS is characterized by the presence of multiple organ system symptoms typically following exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) in environmental or occupational settings. The symptoms of EHS (or Microwave Syndrome) can vary greatly depending on the person but are most often rooted in the neurological system, with other organ system involvement.
How Are Our Bodies Impacted By EMF?
How exactly does EMF cause microwave syndrome? While there is a lot more that we need to learn about EMF and its impact on our physiology, we do know that these electromagnetic frequencies can affect our bodies in a handful of ways[2]:
- EMF can induce changes in calcium signaling cascades
- EMF can increase the activation of free radical processes
- EMF can induce the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in our cells
- EMF can alter neurological and cognitive functions and disrupt the blood-brain-barrier

Symptoms of microwave syndrome can vary from person to person, and this is by no means an exhaustive list. However, some of the most common symptoms include[3]:

Microwave Syndrome Is On The Rise
Why are we seeing more and more people presenting with symptoms of electrohypersensitivity?
Simply put, our levels of EMF radiation are higher than ever, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be diminishing any time soon. As our EMF exposure from electricity, WiFi, mobile phones and towers, Smart meters, and wireless devices continues to climb, so too does the incidence of EHS[3].
Among these factors, the rollout of 5G is by far the most concerning due to the significant level of EMF radiation that 5G emits into our environment. Studies are now showing that the insidious impact of EMFs is appearing more rapidly than before as 5G towers continue to go up.
In fact, in a recent case report published in February of this year (2023), two men came down with symptoms of microwave syndrome (headaches, dizziness, balance issues, fatigue, etc.) shortly following the installation of 5G on the roof above their building. In both cases, the symptoms diminished and eventually resolved once they left the office and steered clear of high EMF environments[4].
In another case study, a man and a woman living in an apartment came down with symptoms of microwave syndrome following the installation of 5G. In their case, the man experienced skin issues, tinnitus, nosebleeds, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. The women reported sleep disturbance, tingling sensation in the body, irritability, tinnitus, confusion, fatigue, heart palpitations, and a feeling of warmth all over the body[5].
These reports clearly identify 5G as a source of toxic exposure to humans.
Unfortunately, due to the fast pace with which technology is evolving, we can’t keep up with the research to ensure that these radiation levels are safe for humans. As it stands today, the guidelines for radiofrequency radiation are set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). The problem with their guidelines, however, is that they are only based on tissue heating. In reality, the detrimental impacts of EMF are evident far before our bodies actually begin heating up[6].
Which begs the question – do we literally have to become “microwaved” before authorities start admitting we have a problem here?
Tips To Protect Yourself From Microwave Syndrome
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies EMFs as “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” and studies continue to explore their potential health effects. (8)
While complete avoidance is impractical, precautionary measures like shielding and exposure reduction may help limit risks.
If you have EHS, you may need to take some pretty serious steps to mitigate your EMF exposure. The more sensitive you are, the more crucial it is for you to keep your environment as low EMF as possible.
With that said, everyone can benefit from reducing their EMF exposure, and there are plenty of ways to go about doing just that.

Next, my recommendation is to address sources of EMF in your home. This is the place where you likely spend most of your time, so creating an environment at home that is low-EMF provides the most bang for your buck.
Some simple at-home tips you can use to lower your EMF exposure include:
- Turning your WiFi off when you’re not using it. For most people, this means unplugging WiFi at night before bed. Although it would be ideal to use an ethernet cord instead of wireless internet, most people find that they need WiFi to work and use their devices during the day. Turning your WiFi off at night gives you a solid seven to eight hours of WiFi-free living, which is much better than nothing.
- Keep your cell phone at a distance when you don’t need it. Cell phones constantly emit radiation; keeping your phone even a few feet away during the day will make a difference.
- Don’t use your devices while they’re charging. Due to the electricity in your walls, your devices will be EMF hotbeds while they’re plugged in. As much as possible, try to charge your computer and phone when you’re not using them instead of using them while on the charger.
- Keep electronics out of the bedroom. Along the same lines as turning off WiFi, keeping your electronic devices out of your bedroom will help to reduce the amount of EMF in your sleeping space.
- For those very sensitive to EMF, you may want to invest in EMF-shielding paint, which you can use on your walls to protect yourself even more. This can be a pretty big investment, so it’s not always my first recommendation. That said, if you’re struggling with your health due to EMFs, this could be a worthy investment.
- Sleep in a faraday cage. This is the only way to completely shield your body from EMF. This is really the only way to completely give your body a rest and a break from EMF so that you can repair and regenerate and get the deepest sleep possible. One of the most disturbing aspects of EMF is its tendency to interfere in brain waves. This dramatically affects sleep quality. This effect has some of the most devastating effects on your health cumulatively over time. It’s imperative you protect your entire body while you sleep with copper and silver wire infused sheets or a “cage” that’s similar to a mosquito net surrounding your bed and body.
