Specifically, research shows that EMF exposure can induce oxidative stress in your body, promoting inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction. While free radical production is part of normal biology, the number of free radicals produced when our cells are exposed to EMF can cause significant damage as our bodies were never meant to be in the presence of so much radiation. 

An excess of free radicals (also called reactive oxygen species –ROS) creates damage to tissues and organs in your body, with the central nervous system being especially vulnerable to oxidative damage via EMF[1].

Antioxidant Defenses

The primary way in which EMF impacts your cells is by inducing oxidative damage. Therefore, increasing the number of antioxidants you have in your body offers one of the best solutions for mitigating this damage. When a reactive oxygen species meets an antioxidant, the antioxidant is able to neutralize it, stopping its damage in its path.

The below sources of antioxidants have been shown to specifically mitigate EMF-induced oxidative stress. 


Flavonoids are a class of antioxidants that can be found in a range of plant foods, including:

  • Acai
  • Moringa 
  • Green tea
  • Broccoli 
  • Kale
  • Berries 

Studies show that flavonoids are potent antioxidants that protect cells from oxidative damage specifically caused by EMF radiation. They appear to reduce radiation damage to the membrane of cells and enhance reparative processes after the cells have been exposed. Researchers regard flavonoids as significant components for biological protection due to their ability to enhance resistance to environmental factors. Furthermore, studies show that flavonoids may also decrease biological age[4][5].

Broccoli Sprouts

Broccoli sprouts are one of the richest sources of the phytonutrient sulforaphane. Sulforaphane boasts a range of health benefits, including anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and, of course, antioxidant[6][7]. 

As an antioxidant agent, sulforaphane increases glutathione in your body. Glutathione is known as one of the most potent biological antioxidants, playing a crucial role in regulating oxidative stress and protecting your cells from free radicals[8][9].

Unfortunately, research shows that EMF exposure can reduce glutathione synthesis while depleting this important antioxidant due to the robust production of free radicals that come with EMF radiation. 

Therefore, incorporating sources of sulforaphane, like broccoli sprouts, into your diet can significantly impact EMF protection. 


Pomegranate is a rich source of antioxidants, along with an array of other nutrients. Research shows that the antioxidants in pomegranate may be particularly helpful for the EMF damage that impacts the neurological system. 

With this in mind, there is growing concern around the impact of radiation from mobile devices as we tend to hold these close to our heads, giving EMF a straight shot to the brain. 

In one study, researchers examined the impact that pomegranate extract would have on changes in brain structure when rats were exposed to EMF from mobile devices. After exposing the animals to different radiation levels, the researchers found that pomegranate had a significant protective effect on the brain tissue, enhancing neurological protection[10]. 

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle is well known for its liver-protective effects, but it appears that the antioxidants in milk thistle may also work to neutralize free radicals from EMF. The primary active compound in milk thistle, Silymarin, may specifically target brain cells, which would provide much-needed mitigation against EMF from mobile devices[11]. 

Green Tea

Green tea is well known as a rich source of antioxidants, particular polyphenols.

Research shows that the antioxidant content of green tea may be protective against low-frequency electromagnetic fields. In one study, researchers gave a group of high-voltage power line workers green tea polyphenol supplements to assess the impact it could have on oxidative stress. The study found that green tea increased antioxidant protection against oxidative stress and reduced oxidative damage to the worker’s DNA[12]. 


Moringa is a superfood plant from southeast Asia that’s just beginning to gain popularity in the West. This nutrient-dense plant has been used for thousands of years as a healing medicine due to its rich nutrient profile along with its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties[13]. 

Animal research shows that moringa, and its powerful antioxidants, can mitigate EMF damage that leads to infertility in males. According to the studies, EMF exposure can damage the testes and may reduce testosterone production. With this information, researchers found that moringa was able to reduce oxidative damage in the testes while mitigating the loss of testosterone that was seen in the non-treatment groups[14][15]. 


Turmeric is another superfood that’s becoming increasingly popular in the West due to its myriad health benefits. Traditionally, turmeric has been used for thousands of years as an anti-inflammatory spice due to its high levels of the active compound curcumin. 

Research shows that curcumin activates something called NRF2, which helps to protect your cells against oxidative damage[16]. 

What’s more, when EMF damages your cells via oxidative stress, a common side effect is inflammation. Research shows that turmeric inhibits the inflammatory response that is typically activist due to EMF exposure. Therefore, turmeric not only helps to mitigate oxidative damage, but also relieves the inflammatory response that typically ensues[17]. 

Medicinal Mushrooms

Research also shows that much like curcumin, cordyceps induce NRF2, enhancing antioxidant defenses[47]. 

Furthermore, reishi mushrooms are known to enhance longevity by protecting DNA from oxidative damage[48]. 

Mitochondria Support

As previously mentioned, EMF impacts the powerhouse of your cells, also known as your mitochondria. Your mitochondria are vitally important to energy production within your cells, which fuels energy production in your entire body. Through the exchange of electrons, your mitochondria produce what is known as ATP (adenosine triphosphate); ATP then goes on to provide energy for the various processes that are constantly taking place in your body. 

Research shows that EMF exposure causes mitochondrial dysfunction by altering activity in the exchange of elections that produce ATP. As described in the studies, EMF seems to promote electron leakage from the mitochondria, making it impossible to carry out normal functions. This can result in dysfunction in the mitochondria themselves and in the cell in which the mitochondria are charged to create energy. The result can be widespread dysfunction of various types of cells[18][19].

Therefore, protecting your mitochondria from harmful EMF is one of the most important things you can do on a cellular level to keep your body functioning optimally. 

Five nutrients that show promise in protecting mitochondrial health include: 

Hyaluronic Acid

Studies show that one of the ways that hyaluronic acid (HA) may support the health of your cartilage is by enhancing mitochondrial health. Research examining the effects of HA on osteoarthritis found that HA may work, at least in part, by mitigating the damage of oxidative stress on mitochondria and inhibiting mitochondrial-driven cell death[49].

Reishi Mushrooms

Research shows that extracts from reishi mushrooms act as antioxidants that specifically protect mitochondrial DNA from oxidative damage. Furthermore, the extracts of reishi also protect the mitochondria themselves, warding off oxidative damage that inhibits their energy-producing abilities[50][51].

In one study, investigators found that reishi extracts may even be neuroprotective as they target mitochondrial function in the brain[52].  


Research shows that selenium can help to protect mitochondrial function by inhibiting cell damage while also enhancing mitochondrial biogenesis. It does this by acting as an antioxidant and combating some of the stress caused by reactive oxygen species[20]. 


Beets, which are high in nitrates, convert their nitrates to nitric oxide, providing various health benefits on a cellular level. When it comes to mitochondrial health, research shows that beet consumption may increase mitochondrial biogenesis while also enhancing activity within the mitochondria – allowing for the production of more energy. 

It also appears that beets may induce metabolic gene expression[21]. 


Research shows that the active compounds in ginger may reduce the effects of mitochondrial dysfunction by increasing mitochondrial biogenesis. In their study, they found that gingerol (a bioactive compound in ginger), enhanced the generation of new, healthy mitochondria[53]. 

Voltage-Gated Calcium Channel Protection 

One of the ways that EMFs impact your body on a cellular level is by interfering with something called voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCC). VGCC’s are crucial to maintaining the balance of intercellular and extracellular calcium and play a role in cardiac health, neurotransmitter release, and neurological function. 

Research shows that in the presence of EMF, the VGCC’s are opened, and calcium is shuttled into the cells without the proper physiological balance that typically allows for the opening and closing of these channels[22]. 


Magnesium is a natural calcium channel blocker, which allows your body to mitigate some of the effects that EMF has on this system. Unfortunately, research shows that EMF can change levels of magnesium in your body – further compounding the issues with VGCC[23]. To make matters worse, magnesium is one of the most deficient nutrients in the Western diet. 

Therefore, consuming foods that are rich in magnesium or supplementing with magnesium directly is crucial to mitigate the harm of EMFs on a cellular level. Foods that are rich in magnesium include nutrient-dense greens like kelp, barley grass, and alfalfa grass[24]. 

Nutrients That Encourage Your Body to Transport and Excrete Impurities

Due to the fact that we can’t “see” EMFs, many people overlook the impact that it has on their health. With that being said, some people are so sensitive to EMF that they can feel the imbalances on a much more significant level. People in this group are often referred to as electrosensitive, and the term “electrohypersensitivity” is now recognized as a clinical condition[25].

While researchers still aren’t sure why some people are more sensitive to EMF than others, one of the factors believed to contribute to electrosensitivity is heavy metal toxicity. The main reason being that someone with a high heavy metal body burden can attract more EMFs to them like an antenna. Furthermore, there is concern that the reactions of heavy metals, plus EMFs, may have serious consequences in the nervous system, which is highly electrical[26].

But it doesn’t end there.

When combined, EMFs and heavy metal pollutants can also bring about undue stress on your immune system.

How so? Heavy metals like lead, mercury, arsenic and cadmium have the ability to either stimulate or suppress your immune activity.

When suppressed, your immune system is weakened and lacks the strength to fight off pathogens like viruses and bacteria. This can increase your susceptibility to illnesses and diminishes your immune system’s energy reserves[54][55].

When overstimulated, your immune response can go into overdrive, creating excessive amounts of inflammation and oxidative stress. This can result in chronic inflammatory processes, hypersensitivity, and autoimmune issues[56]. 

Furthermore, heavy metals can interfere with your gut microbiome, which plays a crucial role in immunity. Research shows that heavy metal toxicity can diminish your good bacteria and increase the number of harmful pathogenic bacteria[57][58][59][60].

Of course, the first line of defense against heavy metal toxicity is to reduce your exposure to heavy metal contaminants as much as you can. Keeping your body free of heavy metals can support a healthy immune system response and help you maintain normal health.

But you can also take steps to support your body’s natural detoxification mechanisms. I consider it to be vitally important for your cellular, metabolic, and overall health. 

Fortunately, there are some key nutrients that support your organs, cells, and tissues – while also enhancing your body’s defenses against environmental contaminants and support your body’s innate ability to transport and excrete them. Those nutrients are:


Chlorella is a type of green algae that’s become increasingly popular in the last decade due to its rich nutrient density. Chlorella offers a rich source of chlorophyll (a potent phytonutrient), omega 3s, protein, and a host of other vitamins and minerals[27].

Research shows that taking chlorella may support your body’s natural ability to trap and gently eliminate the adverse substances, thus reducing the accumulation of environmental contaminants in tissues such as the kidneys, brain, and liver. Silica is a mineral that’s found in abundance in the earth’s crust and is a crucial component to the health of your bones, skin, nails, hair, arteries, and more[32]. 

Research shows that silica acts as a powerful adsorbent for environmental contaminants that have entered the body, meaning that it can help facilitate the natural elimination of the pollutants from your system [33]. Thyroid Protection


Iodine is a mineral that plays a crucial role in the health of your thyroid. In fact, iodine is one of the primary components of thyroid hormones, and without enough iodine in the diet, people develop a thyroid condition known as goiter[34].  

Research shows that of all of your organs, the thyroid is the most vulnerable to radiation from cellphones due to its location in your neck. It appears that EMF exposure from mobile phones may increase the temperature of your thyroid gland, negatively affecting the uptake of iodine. As a result, your thyroid doesn’t receive the nutrients it needs to produce thyroid hormones, which then leads to thyroid dysfunction[35].

To ensure that your thyroid is receiving enough iodine, consuming foods rich in this vital nutrient is necessary. Unfortunately, you won’t find a significant amount of iodine in the standard Western diet, with the exception of iodized salt. 

For a more natural source of iodine, look to seaweed such as kelp, nori, dulse, and or wakame[36]. 

Gut Health Support

Along with your central nervous system, EMF can also directly impact the health of your gut. Specifically, research shows that EMF exposure enhances the proliferation of harmful gut bacteria while decreasing the number of beneficial bacteria[37][38].

By now, most people are aware of the importance of gut health and the essential role that your gut microbiome plays in almost every system of your body. By throwing off this delicate balance, the downstream effects could be detrimental to your well-being on many levels, especially regarding neurological health[39]. 

Prebiotics: Inulin and Flax

Many people are taking probiotics to enhance the number of beneficial bacteria in their gut, which is an excellent tactic for shifting the balance. However, if you don’t pair probiotics with prebiotics, those bacteria will simply come and go without being able to create a home in your gut.
